PLS and Consent Forms

We, Mr. K. Clark Burt, Dr. Lorraine Graham, and Dr. Thuong Hoang, are from the University of Melbourne.  We are studying how students with literacy learning difficulties acquire new vocabulary.  Clark plans to use the data as part of his PhD.  We have identified a gap in current knowledge of how to use games and ICT to teach vocabulary to students with literacy learning difficulties.  We believe that games and ICT provide for concrete and episodic learning contexts, which suit children who have not learned formal operational abstract thinking (see Piaget’s stages of cognitive development). In other words, students with literacy learning difficulties struggle to learn new vocabulary without direct and explicit teaching and games may be an effective way to do this.
